Guitar
The word guitar is a combination of two words. Guit comes from
the Sanskrit word
sangeet, which means music. The second half
of the word,
tar, is purely Persian and means chord or string. Of
course, the ultimate guitar meaning will be found in the music
itself. Like any stringed instrument, guitars may be acoustic,
electric, or both. The electric guitar was invented by Adolf
Rickenbacker in 1931. People learning to play the guitar, even if
they have a strong musical background, often find it easier to
read guitar tab (indicating finger placement) rather than standard
musical notation. A simple guitar chord can appear complex
written in standard notation but straightforward using tablature.*
