The piano was invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori in Florence, Italy, and he built approximately twenty pianos before he died in 1731. Since the 1980s, digital pianos have been available, which use digital sampling technology to reproduce the sound of each piano note. The piano is a crucial instrument in Western classical music, jazz, and most other complex musical genres. A large number of composers are pianists, and they frequently use the piano as a tool for composition. In popular music, although sheet music is produced, it is nowadays more usual for people to learn the piece by ear (that is, by imitation).*
